Anchor Text Strategies for Local SEO Backlinks, Kept Natural

Anchor text is the clickable words in a link. This guide shows the common types and how a local business can mix them so the links read naturally.

  • Plain definitions, no jargon
  • A natural mix of anchor types
  • Why one repeated phrase looks forced

What is anchor text?

Anchor text is the set of clickable words in a link. If a sentence says "ask the family plumbers in Tampa" and those last words are the link, that phrase is the anchor. If the link says "click here," that is the anchor instead.

Google has said it uses anchor text, along with other signals, to understand what the linked page is about. Nobody outside Google knows how much weight it carries, so treat it as one clue among many. What matters for an owner is that the words should make sense to a reader first.

What are the main types of anchor text?

Here are the common types, using a made-up roofing company, Smith Roofing in Tulsa, as the example.

  • Brand name: the link says Smith Roofing.
  • Website address: the link shows smithroofing.com as written.
  • Generic words: the link says this company, read more or their website.
  • Descriptive phrase: the link says a roofing contractor in Tulsa, worded to fit the sentence.
  • Exact keyword: the link says Tulsa roofer, the same phrase someone might type into Google.
  • Image link: a logo or photo is the link, and its description text acts as the anchor.

A real set of links from many different people usually includes a bit of everything, with the brand name and the website address showing up often.

Why does one repeated phrase look forced?

People link in different ways. One writes the business name, another pastes the address, a third says a local contractor. A set of links that all use the same service-and-city phrase looks arranged, because it is not how real references pile up.

Google's guidance on link spam lists keyword-rich anchor text in large-scale campaigns among the patterns it warns about. There is also no magic percentage. Be wary of anyone who quotes one split as if it were a rule, because it is not published by Google and it changes from market to market.

Here is a simple order of work you can follow, or ask us to follow for you.

  1. Look at the anchors you already have. Most local sites already lean toward the business name and web address.
  2. Let the brand name and the web address carry most of the new links.
  3. Use descriptive phrases that fit the sentence around them. Add the city or trade only where it reads naturally.
  4. Keep exact-keyword phrases few.
  5. Match the anchor to the page it points to. A link to a service page can describe that service, while a link to the home page suits your brand name.
  6. Add links slowly over time, not in one burst.

In our gap review we compare your anchors with a competitor's, then propose anchors for each placement in the written plan. See how the plan works, and learn how local relevance works for the wider picture.

What are the risks and limits?

Careful anchor planning makes a link profile look more natural. It does not make buying links safe. Buying or exchanging links to influence rankings can go against Google's spam policies on link schemes, and relevant, editorial-style placements reduce that risk without removing it.

Hosts may also edit the wording of a sentence, so the final anchor can differ from the one proposed. Links are one signal among many, and results depend on your site, your competitors and your category. We cannot promise rankings, traffic or leads.

Questions about buy local seo backlinks in United States

Should I put my city name in every anchor?
No. Using the city in every anchor looks forced and gives you little room to sound natural. Add the city or trade where the sentence calls for it, and let your brand name and web address carry many of the links. A mix is more natural than any single pattern.
Can I choose the exact anchor for every link?
Not always. We propose anchors for each placement and agree them with you in the plan. Some hosts edit wording to suit their own article. If a seller promises full control over every anchor on every site, ask how that fits with natural writing.
How do I check my competitor's anchors?
Backlink checking tools list the links pointing to a site along with their anchor text. Free versions show only a sample, so the picture is partial. Our gap review includes this comparison, and we tell you which parts of it are samples and which are complete.
Does anchor text still matter?
Google has said it uses anchor text as one clue to what a page is about, among many other signals. We do not know its weight and we do not promise any result from it. The safest approach is to write anchors that read well to a person and fit the page they point to.
